Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Nayeb-e-Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 20th June, 2024 expressing deep concern over the deteriorating flood situation in greater Sylhet region.
Continuous rainfall and the mountain runoff of water caused severe flood situation in entire Sylhet region and I am deeply concerned about the overall situation. I am urging the government to immediately recover the stranded people, subsequently to take them into safe shelter and also to provide them food, dry ration, medicines and other essentials. Besides, I am calling upon the countrymen to take stand by the side of the flood victims.
Already more than 1.3 millions people of greater Sylhet including Sylhet, Sunamganj, Habiganj and Moulovi Bazar became badly affected by this flood situation. Only in Sylhet city, over 0.5 million dwellers became waterlogged now. Crops, Agricultural lands, vegetables, fruit garden and seeds have been submerged by the flood water. The victims find no place even to keep their domestic animals. The low-lying areas of Netrokona, Sherpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram and Gaibandha districts have been submerged as well. Heavy to very heavy rainfalls may deteriorate the flood situation further.
The flood victims of the entire Sylhet region must be recovered and rescued immediately and they should be taken to a safer place. Moreover, foods, medicines, doctor's team must be sent to affected areas at once. I am calling upon the local leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, the solvent donors, human welfare organisations and the countrymen to help and assist the flood victims.
