-Maulana ATM Masum

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 22nd December 2022 protesting and condemning the government’s move as they compelled Ali Azam, a detained BNP leader of Gazipur district to take part in his mother’s funeral prayer in handcuffs.

On last 20th December, Ali Azam, a detained BNP leader of the Gazipur district was allowed to take part in his mother’s funeral prayer in handcuffs. Even his handcuffs and shackles were not removed during the prayer, which violates religious freedom and human rights. We are vehemently condemning such inhuman acts of the government.

According to the constitution and the prevailing laws, no one can be blamed until the allegations brought against his/her are proven. In the name of a political case, interfering with anyone’s constitutional and religious rights is unjustified and immoral. The incident of compelling a detained and helpless grassroots opposition leader to attend his mother’s funeral has shocked the nation; it is really regrettable.

We are urging the concerned authorities to be refrained from doing such immoral and inhuman activities in the future.
