Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman placed on 7-day remand; Acting Ameer condemns

- Professor Mujibur Rahman

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Ameer Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 13th December 2022 protesting and condemning the incident of taking Jamaat Ameer in a 7-day police remand after showing him arrested in a false case.

Police have arrested Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman from his residence this midnight. They have produced him before the court today by showing him arrested in a false case. The prosecution sought a 10-day remand in the name of interrogation just to harass him. The court granted a 7-day remand which contradicts the directives of the higher court.

The allegations which have been brought against Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman are totally false and politically motivated. He has no relation with any secret or covert organization. Jamaat-e-Islami follows the systematic and democratic trend of politics. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman’s activities are very open and visible. He conducted outstanding relief activities in Sylhet and other regions of the country during the recent floods. He also worked hard to provide emergency financial and relief activities. As the flood ends, he also conducted massive rehabilitation works. He also took a stand beside the minority victims who lost their nearest one in a boat capsize incident. His noble and humanitarian initiatives were highly appreciated in the social and mainstream media.

He has been arrested in connection with a false case just to thwart the ongoing simultaneous movement to press home the 10-point demands of the opposition forces. We want to assert that the movement will never be subdued by continuing such oppression and torture. We are demanding the cancellation of the police remand and immediate release of Dr. Shafiqur Rahman.
