Acting Secretary General condemns the detention of Lakhipur district and Dhaka city Jamaat leaders

- Maulana ATM Masum

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 25th November 2022 protesting and condemning the unjustified detention of 4 leaders and activists including Lakhipur district Jamaat Ameer, Nayeb-e-Ameer and Dhaka city South Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s central Majlish-e-Shura member and Lakhipur district Jamaat Ameer Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, central Majlish-e-Shura member and district’s Nayeb-e-Ameer AR Hafiz Ullah and another leader were on bail, granted by the High Court. On 24th November, they went to a Lakhipur district court for a regular appearance. But the court did not grant them bail and sent them to jail.

Despite the High Court’s granted bail, the lower court sent them to jail and thus caused harassment against them. The leaders were not supposed to jail if the judiciary could function properly and independently. By sending them to jail in connection with some false cases, the government has intervened in their basic rights, which is a clear violation of the law and the constitution. Whereas the government has made another repressive step against Dhaka city south Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary Kamaluddin by keeping him imprisoned. We are also condemning such move.

I am urging the concerned authorities to release all detained leaders and activists including Ruhul Amin Bhuiyan, AR Hafiz Ullah, and M Kamaluddin immediately.
