Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 17th August 2022 expressing deep concern regarding the secret prison and torture cell named ‘Aainaghor’, operated by the intelligence agency of Bangladesh government and simultaneously urging to reveal the real fact through a fair investigation by the United Nations.

“An online news portal namely ‘Netranews’ is being published from Sweden. The portal recently published a video report in regards to the secret prison and torture cell named ‘Aainaghor’, operated by the intelligence agency of the Bangladesh government. The report stated that a significant number of opposition leaders and activists are being kept detained in the secret prison cell of Aainaghor. Severe repression and torture have been carried out against all those prisoners. The countrymen think as the incumbent government has come to office through a voter-less farcical election; this is why they are torturing the opposition leaders and activists in such a brutal way. It can never be accepted. We are vehemently condemning and protesting such heinous torture by the intelligence agencies of the Bangladesh government.

Acting Secretary General further stated that, following the telecast of such report by Netranews, Amnesty International issued a statement on 15th August. This is a heinous and notorious incident of human rights violation. Amnesty International also urged the High Commissioner of the UN Human Rights Commission, who is visiting Bangladesh right now, to condemn the incidents and also conduct a fair investigation into the matter.

Maulana Masum said, since the present government came to the power, they murdered and abducted a significant number of opposition leaders and activists. The victim families have appealed several times to the government seeking remedy but their appeals remained unattended and unheard. As such, we are urging to form a fair investigation commission under the United Nations to investigate the matter in order to reveal the real facts.
