Police’s arrest drive continues in Gazipur; 53 arrested; Acting Secretary General condemns

- Maulana ATM Masum

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 1st August 2022 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of 53 people from different places of Gazipur city including 12 leaders and activists of Jamaat-Shinir and 41 general students.

Police have been continuing their arrest drive for the last two days in Gazipur. Police have arrested 8 Jamaat leaders and 4 activists of Islami Chhatrashibir including ward Jamaat Ameer Md. Rahmat Ullah, Maulana Sanaullah, Ward secretary Kamal Hossain and Md. Akhtaruzzaman. Police also raided two student dormitories and arrested 41 general students as well. In total 53 men have been arrested during the arrest drive. Police have been arresting and harassing Jamaat leaders and activists, general masses, and examinees. I am condemning the ongoing arrest drive.

The countrymen are really worried as the arrest drive is going on without any valid reason in Gazipur city. General people and students are not spared from such harassment. It is a heinous conspiracy to destroy the student careers of some potential students by arresting DUET students and examinees from two messes of the DUET area. This is a threat to democracy. Police’s actions are nothing but excess exercise. We are urging the concerned authorities to stop the ongoing arrest drive and harassment.

The country is suffering from various misdeeds, corruption, abduction, kidnapping, and murders. Instead of freeing the nation from such an unbearable crisis, the government is arresting the Jamaat leaders and activists who have clean images and who are working sincerely to build the nation. Jamaat-e-Islami has been continuing its systematic, democratic and peaceful movement for the sake of the people. No one could subdue such movement in the past and will be, Insha Allah.

I am calling upon the countrymen to be vocal against the incumbent government who had seized democracy and people’s voting rights and simultaneously became failure to resolve people’s fundamental crisis. I am also urging the concerned authorities to stop repression and to release all detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir immediately.
