-Professor Mujibur Rahman

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and former Parliament member Professor Mujibur Rahman issued the following statement on 13th June 2022 protesting and condemning the imprudent and untoward remark of parliament member Sheikh Tonmoy about Jihad in the parliament.

On last 13th of June, addressing the speaker of the Parliament, its member Sheikh Tonmoy said, “Honorable Speaker, please take action so that no one can utter the word ‘Jihad’ in the parliament. We are condemning his imprudent and indiscreet comment. We want to assert that Jihad is a frequently used word of the Holy Quran and it is a comprehensive word of Islam. Jihad is the basic spirit of Islam. Jihad refers to carrying out the struggle for justice and self-rectification. In some occasions, Jihad stands for the ultimate struggle for defending the Islamic state.

He further stated that it is the basic purpose of Jihad is to continue the effort for saving lives, properties, and lands and also to preserve own dignity, and independence and simultaneously save others from injustices. Jihad means to do something better and also to remove injustices, repression, and evils from society. This is a spiritual struggle against social, financial, and political exploitations and injustices. Jihad is an endeavor in favor of the repressed and also against all types of oppressors and tyrants. So, the fellow countrymen have completely understood that the oppressors, corrupted people, extortionists and tender terrorists can raise their objections against Jihad.

Islam is the state religion of Bangladesh. 90 percent of people of this country are Muslims and no one can raise objections about any terminology of the Holy Quran. As such, we are urging Sheikh Tonmoy to withdraw his imprudent and indiscreet comment about Jihad immediately. Besides, we are urging calling upon the concerned authorities to take effective measures so that no one can make any such comment about Islam or Islamic terminology in the future.
