22 general people arrested in Chapai Nawabganj; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 28 July 2021 protesting and condemning the unjustifiable arrest of 22 general people of Chapai Nawabganj Sadar Upazila.

“Police have arrested 22 general people from Chapai Nawabganj Sadar Upazila on 27 July at 11 pm. I am condemning police’s such move vehemently. The fact is, one of the arrestees had bought a motorbike several days back. His friends and some other youths wanted a food treat from him. Subsequently, he organized an event. Political program is far away, it was not a religious or social gathering even. But mysteriously police arrested all of them from a dinner event and sued a case accusing them of attending a meeting to create anarchy. The court later denied their bail plea and sent to the jail.

It is unjust, unlawful and unconstitutional to arrest a citizen just out of suspicion. People’s rights and dignity severely affected by such action. According to the constitution, all citizens of Bangladesh have due right to move freely and to lead an independent life. It is citizen’s basic and fundamental rights. This is why, such arrest is painful. I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detainees of Chapai Nawabganj district immediately.”
