Secretary General recalls the sacrifice of martyr Noor Hossain; urges to raise voice against autocracy

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 10 November 2020 marking Shaheed (martyr) Noor Hossain Day.

“10 November is observed as Shaheed Noor Hossain Day. He was killed on this day of 1987 while protesting autocratic rule and pressing for restoration of democracy. This day is very significant in the political history of the country. The sacrifice of Noor Hossain inspired and motivated millions of youths. The movement against autocracy ultimately turned into a mass upsurge which subsequently compelled the then autocratic ruler to step down.

Democracy in true sense is not established in the country yet. In guise of democracy, an authoritarian rule is going on which has seized people’s rights. To get rid of the situation, we have to be inspired with the spirit of Shaheed Noor Hossain in a bid to launch massive resistance against all undemocratic forces.

I am urging my fellow countrymen to take stance unitedly against autocracy and also to establish and secure democracy, rule of law and basic human rights.”
