Onion price hits record high at Tk220 per kg; Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan expresses concern

Assistant Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan has issued the following statement on 14 November 2019 expressing deep concern over the increasing price of onion.

“We, along with the countrymen are deeply worried as the prices of onion have increased alarmingly. It’s price already has gone out of the common’s reach.

Several days back, commerce minister Tipu Munshi said that, there is no possibilities of getting onion below 100 taka per kilogram as the onions are being imported at high price. He further assured that the price will get down as more onions are under import process. But we are observing with due concern that the onion is being sold in the market now from 200 taka to 220 taka per kilogram.

Such an alarming price hike of onion have caused huge sufferings for the common people. The people are extremely frustrated. They are raising questions, who are controlling the onion market? Are they stronger than the government? Are the ill-traders are creating such price hike or the government is making syndicates comprising party men? It is the utmost failure of the government as they failed to keep onion’s price within people’s reach.

The commerce minister should resign immediately conceding his failure to control onion price.”
