Elections must be held only after ensuring necessary reforms and a level playing field

-Mobarak Hossain

Member of the Central Executive Council of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and Coordinator of the Jessore–Kushtia region Mobarak Hossain said that after the fall of fascism, the expectations of the people of the country are high. Under such circumstances, the nation will by no means accept any kind of election held in a haphazard manner. The government must ensure free, fair, and acceptable elections. For this, minimum reforms are necessary. Without ensuring minimum reforms and a level playing field, a fair election is not possible. Another condition for fair elections is a neutral administration. The accomplices of fascism are still firmly entrenched in all sectors of the administration. It is absolutely impossible to hold fair elections with this administration.

He further said that the interim government itself must provide legal protection to the July fighters. This matter cannot, under any circumstances, be left hanging for the next parliament. Moreover, for the rehabilitation of the families of martyrs and the injured, at least one member from each family must be provided with a job according to their qualifications.

He said that currently more than 90 countries in the world have adopted the PR (Proportional Representation) system. In the PR system, every vote is valued. This method produces a quality parliament. Both small and bigger parties can enter parliament and play a role in nation-building. In the PR system, there is no possibility of a single party securing a huge number of seats to come to power and turning fascist. Therefore, to block the path to fascism, elections must be held under the PR system.

Mr. Mobarak Hossain made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at the Rukon (Member) Conference organized by Kushtia District Jamaat on the morning of Saturday, August 9, presided over by the District Ameer, Professor Maulana Abul Hashem. Special guests included members of the Jessore–Kushtia regional team Dr. Alamgir Biswas and Professor Khondkar Ali Mohsin. In addition, Kushtia district Nayeb-e-Ameer and Jamaat-nominated MP candidate for Kushtia Veramara and Mirpur constituency, and former chairman Abdul Gafur; MP candidate for Khoksa Kumarkhali constituency, Afzal Hossain; and MP candidate for Daulatpur constituency, Maulana Belal Uddin and Jamaat’s central Majlish-e-Shura member Farhad Hossain were also present in the conference. The program was hosted by District Secretary Mr. Sujauddin Jowarder.
