A conference of the city and district Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was held on Tuesday with party’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman in the chair. All city and district Ameers attended the conference. In the inaugural speech, Acting Ameer stated that, the nation is crossing a crucial time now. There is no existence of rule of law, human rights and justice in the country. The government has kept Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman behind the bar for last 15 months and party’s Assistant Secretary General ATM Azharul Islam for 13 years in connection with some concocted and politically motivated cases. More than 300 Jamaat leaders and activists are also detained across the country. We are demanding immediate release of all detained leaders and activists.
The incumbent government is not an elected government. Practically, no election took place on last 7th January. It was farce in the name of election. The people did not participate in the electoral process. The illegitimate government has been imposing one after one anti-people decision. They have destroyed the educational system. They have ruined the economy by exercising massive corruption and looting. The government has no moral right to stay in office. We are urging to cancel the farcical election and to take steps for holding a fresh election under a caretaker government.
The conference expressed deep concern over the price hike of the essentials and adopted the following proposals:
The city and district Ameer conference of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is being held in such a situation where just several days back at least 44 people have been killed in a tragic fire accident in Baily Road of the capital. We are expressing deep shock at the incident and praying for the salvation of the departed souls. The conference is also extending sympathy to the mournful families and urging the concerned authorities to pay due compensation to the victim families.
The conference has been observing with deep concern that 58 days have been passed since the government has seized the office. But within this timeframe, they did not take any pro-people decision. Rather their anti-people move have increased the mass suffering. Immediately after coming to the office, the government has increased the price of gas and electricity. Instead of curbing unprecedented corruption, irregularities and system loss in these two sectors, the government has hiked the price and caused trouble to the people. Thus, they have indulged the corrupt personalities to continue their ill-deeds.
Price of all essentials including rice, lentils, oil, sugar, meat and fishes and vegetables have increased alarmingly. The government did not take any measure to curb the price hike. Rather, the government backed syndicate have caused the price spiral to ensure their benefit. Although, the government is verbally talking against the syndicate but practically they did not take any measure to foil the syndicate system. The holy month of Ramadan is knocking at the door. At the moment, instead of controlling the price, the government is taking action to make another price hike. Instead of preserving the sanctity of the month, the government has issued directive to reduce the number of Iftar program. Through such decision, the government in one side has devaluated the status of this month at the same they have interfered the religious rights of the people.
The conference is also observing that the government is destroying the financial institutions one by one. The government has taken no step to facilitate business, production and generating job opportunities. The national economy is in danger now. The ruling party men have embezzled the money of the public fund and became richer of another level.
The city and district Ameer conference is of the view that the incumbent government is not an elected one and this is why, they do not feel any liabilities to the people. The conference is urging to cancel the farcical election and to take steps for holding a fresh election under a caretaker government. Besides, it calls to withdraw the increased price of gas and power and also to bring the price of all essentials within the people’s capacity ahead of the month of holy Ramadan.
