Acting Ameer accuses government of plotting conspiracy to make opposition leaders disqualified for election

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has addressed a press briefing on 5th December protesting the ongoing nationwide secret murder incidents and the conspiracy for making opposition leaders disqualified for the election. Jamaat’s central executive committee member and party’s publicity and media secretary Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda hosted the press conference. Among others, Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim, central executive committee member and Dhaka south city Ameer Nurul Islam Bulbul, central working committee member and Dhaka north city’s Acting Abdur Rahman Musa were present on the occasion.

Acting Ameer Professor Mujibur Rahman’s address to the nation is given below:

All praise to Almighty Allah and peace and blessing be upon the final Prophet (pbuH).

Dear journalist friends,

Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,

The present autocrat Awami League government has seized all basic rights of the citizens including the voting rights, freedom of speech, and freedom of movement. Right now, who are at the age of 33, could not cast their votes since they are 18. The entire electoral system and mechanism has been destroyed. The election commission has declared schedule for the next election to pave the way for the ruling party to come back to the power through another farcical election. All most all political parties, civil societies and professional sections have rejected this schedule. The ruling party men are contesting in this election as independent candidate against the original party nominee. Thus, they are making a farce in the name of election. Subduing all standard of democracy, they have entrapped some opportunist people by giving bribes and all arrangements are going on to conduct the most stigmatized political event in country’s history. We are condemning such ill-politics of the government.

Dear journalist friends,

To make the farcical election successful, the opposition leaders and activists are being kept imprisoned in connection with various false and concocted cases. At present, more than 20 thousand opposition men are remaining behind the bar. By applying such strategy, the government has also made the judiciary controversial. The court was always the last shelter for the general masses. But the government is abusing the judiciary to subdue the opposition leaders and activists and as such human rights are being violated alarmingly. Rule of law has sent into exile. Lower courts are functioning as per the design of the government and accordingly the opposition men are being rewarded with different penalties. The court are conducting cross examination till night and they are making a hurry to convict the opposition men. Even in some cases, sentences are being handed down against the opposition leaders without any hearing which has put a stigma upon the judiciary. So far, BNP and Jamaat’s 700 people have been awarded with different types of conviction. The government is plotting conspiracies to convict the top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami including Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, Secretary General Professor Mia Golam Porwar and Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan in order to make them disqualified to contest in the election. On 3rd December, in an old case of 2011, charge has been framed against 72 Jamaat leaders and activists including the aforesaid leaders.

Dear journalists,

The government is interfering unjustifiably against the just and democratic rights of the opposition parties. The authority has been continuing arrest drives nationwide. In case the law enforcers fail to arrest to the targeted opposition men, they are detaining other family members and harassed them bitterly. Furniture are being vandalized. Women and kids are being insulted and humiliated randomly. Even women, kids and the aged people are not spared from such repression. The government has created a reign of terror by conducting torture and repression. People are being arrested from market, from working place and the Mosque. Based on some black law, this oppressive drive is going on which has forced thousands of opposition men to leave their houses.

Fellow journalists,

The constitution of the country has guaranteed all citizens to live properly. But the ruling authority has been misusing the law enforcers and the administration to commit secret murders. In recent times, several Jamaat and opposition men had been picked up by the miscreants in Rajshahi, Natore, Naogaon and Jessore. Later, the victims were are found as murdered brutally or severely injured. The miscreants break their hands or legs. Some 20 incidents of violence and terrorism have taken place in these districts recently. Two popular doctors of Rajshahi namely Dr. Ershad Ali Dulal and Dr. Golam Kazem Ali have been murdered brutally. Rangpur district’s Mithpukur Upazila’s 3 number pairabond union chairman Mahbubur Rahman has been murdered as well. Two people were killed in Bogra and Naogaon. Maulana Abu Nowshad Nomami and village doctor Alauddin of Natore district have become the victim of secret attacks. The miscreants broke both the hands and legs of Maulana Nomani. Even under such dire situation, the police took him in the local police station and assaulted him physically. Such role of the police forces is very tragic, condemnable and it goes against the spirit of humanity.

Dear journalists,

Secret attacks are being carried out against the opposition men in various places of the country. The opposition leaders and activists cannot stay in their homes. Recently, Awami League leaders in Mymensingh, Chittagong, Feni and Ashulia have made showdown with arms and lethal weapons in broad daylight. The also attacked the labor community leaders. Police is not accepting any case in this regard. Earlier, on last 22nd November, the law enforcers carried a raid in the house of the detained Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and harassed his family members. These incidents substantiated that there is no congenial atmosphere for holding an election now. The main target of the government is to keep the opposition out of the election.

Dear journalists,

The nation is passing a critical juncture now. The government is abusing the law enforcers, party cadres and judiciary to destroy all state apparatus. The activities of Awami League have made it clear that they are not interested to have any opposition parties in the country. They openly declared to eliminate BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami within next 10 years. There is no alternative but launching broad base movement to foil such conspiracies of the government and also to protect and preserve country’s independence and sovereignty. I am urging all party leaders and activists, well-wishers, other opposition parties and the countrymen to observe all declared programs in order to intensify the ongoing movement protesting the anarchy and terrorism of the ruling party and also to ensure immediate release of Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, other political detainees and religious scholars, to restore caretaker government system and to secure voting and other basic rights of the people.

Dear journalist friends,

The nation always remembers your bold role in the previous occasions against tyranny and autocracy. We are expecting similar strong and courageous role from your part against the incumbent autocratic regime. I am concluding my speech by thanking you all.

Allah Hafez
