A press conference was held on behalf of the lawyers of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar. Supreme Court Advocate Matiur Rahman Akanda addressed the conference on behalf of the lawyers. His address is as follows:
Dear journalist friends, Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah,
As you are well informed that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar was arrested from an in-house meeting on 6th September 2021. He was produced before the court on 7th September and a plea of 7-day remand was made by the police. The court granted 4-day remand. Then he experienced another remand for two days. Mia Golam Porwar secured bail from the High Court on 8th November. The government side made an appeal against that bail order but the court upheld its order by dismissing their plea. But immediate before his release from the jail on 14th February 2022, he was shown arrested in another case and was taken into remand for 3 days.
Then again, he was granted bail by the high court on 24th April 2022. The government again plead against that order and the court rejected that appeal. But again he was re-arrested from the jail gate on 30th May 2022. He was shown arrested in a case, filed by the anti-corruption commission. Even in that case, Mr. Porwar secured bail from the high court on 30th March of this year. The government appealed against the order but the chamber judge rejected it once again.
Thus, securing bail from the high court three times, he proceeded to get released from jail on 16th April, during the last Ramadan. But again he was shown arrested in another false case. He was produced by the police before the court on 27th April. The prosecution appealed for a 10-day remand. The court granted one day remand again.
Dear journalists,
He finally secured bail from all cases on 29th May. Thus he got bail in all cases. His bail bond was submitted accordingly on 13th June. As no more case was against him, he was supposed to be released. The prison authority was also directed by the high court on 17th May 2022 to release him without any further harassment immediately after receiving the bail bond. So, any step of re-arresting him or showing him arrested will be tantamount to contempt of court.
But then, we came to know that on 13th June, DMP’s Polton Model police station appealed to the court to show him arrested in 28 number case dated on 25th April 2021. Although, he was not shown arrested in this case. Whether he will be shown arrested or not, will be decided through a hearing scheduled to be held on 19th June. As he has no case against him, so there is no barrier to his release. Keeping him imprisoned will be unlawful and a violation of the order of the High Court. Under the circumstances, we are urging the concerned authorities to show respect toward the law, constitution, and court orders and to release him immediately.
Finally, we thank all of you for your cooperation.”
