Professor Mia Golam Porwar’s lawyers demand his immediate release

On behalf of the lawyers of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, Dhaka Bar Association’s former Senior Vice-President Advocate SM Kamal Uddin briefed his latest legal condition and demanded his immediate release. Dhaka Bar Association’s treasurer, AGS, and other senior lawyers were present at that time.

In his speech, Advocate Kamal Uddin said, “Dear journalists and fellow lawyers, we are of the view that it is important to inform the people, local and international human rights bodies, and the countrymen about the latest bail condition of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is country’s one of the largest constitutional, systematic, and democratic party. The Secretary General of this organization and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar was arrested by Vatara police station on 6th September 2021. He was produced before the court on 7th September and a plea of 7-day remand was made by the police. The court granted 4-day remand. Later, he was given bail by the High Court and the chamber judge. Again, a false and fabricated case was filed against him. He consequently secured bail repeatedly but so far, he has been re-arrested from the jail gate for 3 times. He has been kept behind the bar for 21 months unlawfully. We are condemning the incident severely.

Dear lawyers,
We want to inform the human rights activists and the countrymen that, we have no word to condemn the ongoing harassments which are being carried out against him. We already released his bail bond once again. We want his release immediately.

We want to add that, the government has violated the constitution and his basic rights to keep him imprisoned. We have submitted his bail bond as per the directives of the High Court this time. We are expecting that, the authority will not violate the constitution and the court’s order any more. He has secured bail in all cases. As he has no case against him, so there is no barrier to his release. We are urging all human rights watchdogs to probe into the issue seriously.

We are urging the government to refrain from staging any other drama and to release him immediately.

Finally, we are thanking all of you for your cooperation.”
