Dr. Shafiqur Rahman re-elected as Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s present Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has been re-elected as Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for the second time for the session of 2023-2025 session. It should be mentioned that the members, from all over the country, participated in the process of direct voting to elect Ameer from the last 5th to the 30th of October.

A brief profile of Dr. Shafiqur Rahman is given below:
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman was born at Kulaura Upazila, in Moulivibazar District on 31st October 1958. His father was late Abru Mia and his mother was late Khatibun Nesa. His current address is located in the Sabujbagh area under Shah Poran thana of Sylhet city. He obtained his MBBS degree in 1983 from Sylhet Medical College. In his student life, he discharged duty as the Sylhet city President of Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir.

He became a member of Jamaat’s central Majlish-e-Shura in 1985. From 1986 to 1988, he became the secretary of the Sylhet district Jamaat-e-Islami. From 1989 to 1991, he became the Nayeb-e-Ameer of the Sylhet district, and from 1991 to 1998, he discharged his duty as the Sylhet district Jamaat Ameer. He became the Ameer of Sylhet city Jamaat Ameer in 1998 and served the organization holding the same position till 2007.

He became the central working committee member of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1998. He became the Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami in 2010. Dr. Shafiq became a member of the central executive committee in 2011. He served the organization as the Acting Secretary General since September 2011. From 2017 to 2019, he performed role as the Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has been discharging responsibility as the Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami from 2020 till now.

The incumbent government imprisoned him for several times in connection with some false and concocted cases. He played a significant role to secure people’s voting rights and also in the different democratic movements of the country.

He is the chairman of a non-government medical college and hospital. He is serving a High School & College and simultaneously as the chairman of the management committee of another high school. He has founded several orphanages, mosques, charity organizations, and voluntary clubs. Besides, he performed duties as the Management committee chairman of Kamil Madrasa.

He visited Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Belgium, Turkey, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, and Brunei.

He is blessed with two sons and a daughter. His wife, Dr. Amina Shafique was a member of the 8th national parliament. His two daughters have completed their higher studies in medical studies. His only one son has completed his MBBS study and now he is engaged in serving humanity as a physician.
