Fire, explosion at Chittagong depot

Death toll goes up to 50; Jamaat Ameer mourns; urges to help the victims by all means

-Dr. Shafiqur Rahman

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following message of condolence on 5th June 2022 expressing deep shock as more than 50 people including 5 fire service personnel in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda Upazila of Chattogram.

The death toll in the fire and subsequent explosions at BM Container Depot in Sitakunda Upazila of Chattogram has gone up to at least 50 while more than 5 hundred people, including police and fire service personnel, sustained burn injuries in the incident. Many of the injury victims are in critical condition. Local hospitals are struggling to provide medical treatment to injured patients. A massive humanitarian crisis has been created over there. I am expressing deep shock for the deceased who had been killed in this accident. May Allah accept them as martyrs. I am also praying for the quick recovery of the injured and extending sympathy to their families.

People of the surrounding area also became affected by the accident. The severeness of the accident is apparent several kilometers away from the actual spot. Many families have lost their only earning member. Under the circumstances, I am urging my fellow party leaders and activists to take a stand by their side.

In order to bring the fire under control quickly, armed forces, helicopters, and the latest technologies should be used. I am calling upon the concerned authorities to provide due compensation to the victim’s families.
