Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former Member of Parliament, Professor Mia Golam Porwar, issued a statement on April 5th, expressing deep concern and condemning the passage of the anti-Muslim Waqf Amendment Bill in India and the BJP government’s ongoing anti-Muslim actions.
In the statement, he said: “We express deep concern, condemnation, and protest over the passage of the anti-Muslim Waqf Amendment Bill in India and the BJP government's continuous anti-Muslim measures. The controversial Waqf Amendment Bill passed in India’s Lok Sabha on April 3rd is yet another despicable example of the BJP government's well-orchestrated attempt to undermine the religious freedom, ownership, and rights of Muslims community. Through this law, the government has opened the door to make interference and occupation of religious assets donated by Muslims—such as mosques, madrasas, graveyards, and shelters.
He further stated that the amendment mandates the inclusion of two non-Muslim members in both the Waqf Boards and the Central Waqf Council. As a result, the authority of the Waqf Boards will be significantly weakened, which is a grave concern for the Muslim community. This raises the risk of blatant interference in Muslim religious institutions. We believe that the bill was passed with politically malicious intention.
He continued, “More than 250 million Muslims currently live in India. Ancient mosques, madrasas, and various religious institutions are being destroyed through different conspiracies. One of the fundamental tenets of Islamic law, 'triple talaq,' has been banned. Religious conversion under the guise of love marriages has been restricted. Muslims are frequently lynched under the context of possessing beef. Muslims are also being forced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram.’ These actions of the BJP government clearly prove its extreme hostility toward the Muslims.
We call upon the BJP government of India to refrain from taking such anti-Muslim activities and express our hope that they will take effective steps to protect the lives, property, and all interests of Indian Muslims, and ensure their safety through all necessary measures.”
