Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 11th December, 2024 expressing deep concern over the unjust detention of 79 Bangladeshi fishermen and sailors along with two fishing boats by the Indian Coast Guard from the Sundarbans area.
“On December 10th, around noon, the Indian Coast Guard unjustly detained 79 Bangladeshi fishermen and sailors, along with two modern fishing boats, namely FV Meghna-5 and FV Layla-2, from the Sundarbans area. The act of capturing Bangladeshi fishermen and sailors from Bangladesh’s maritime territory is extremely unfortunate and unwanted. We are deeply concerned about India’s provocative actions. This incident poses a severe threat to the security of independent and sovereign Bangladesh. Such events must be stopped immediately.”
He further added, “We urge the Bangladesh government to take immediate and firm action to bring the detained fishermen and sailors along with their fishing boats back to Bangladesh. I also urge the government of Bangladesh to take necessary security measures to ensure that such incidents do not occur again in the future.”
