Mymensingh district Jamaat Ameer arrested; Acting Secretary General protests

- Maulana ATM Masum

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 5th January 2023 protesting and condemning the arrest of Mymensingh district Jamaat Ameer Md. Abdul Karim.

“Police arrested Mymensingh district Jamaat Ameer Md. Abdul Karim unjustifiably from his house on the 4th of January evening. He was sent to prison on 5th January after he was shown arrested in an old case. I am vehemently condemning his unlawful arrest.

The incumbent government has been oppressing and harassing the leaders and activists of the opposition parties, particularly Jamaat-e-Islami severely. They are talking about democracy and election on one hand while on the other, they are keeping opposition men behind the bar for days. Actually, they do not believe in democracy. The countrymen think opposition leaders and activists are being arrested just to hinder the ongoing democratic and peaceful political program of the opposition quarters. I want to assert that, political programs and movements can never be subdued by continuing such repression, torture, and harassment.

I am urging the concerned authorities to stop oppression and to release all detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Chhatrashibir including Md. Abdul Karim immediately.
