Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 16th January, 2017 protesting and condemning the establishment of the statue of a Greek Goddess at the premise of the Bangladesh Supreme Court and simultaneously urging the concerned authorities to remove that statue immediately.
“90 percent of the populations are Muslims in Bangladesh. The country is recognized as the third largest Muslim country of the world and according to the constitution; the state religion of Bangladesh is Islam.
Existence of the statue is not allowed in Islam. Establishment of any statue in the Supreme Court Premise is unacceptable and completely irrelevant. The Muslim communities of the country, in particular, the religious scholars already placed their demand to the government to remove this statue and already many demonstration programs have been observed protesting such an establishment. The countrymen expected that the government would move back from such an unjust, unacceptable, irrelevant and unwanted step and remove the statue. But till date, the government has taken no initiative in this regard and as such the Muslim majority people have become extremely aggrieved and shocked.
We want to assert that, the people will not accept the installation of any such statue in the Supreme Court premises. I am asking the government to remove this statue immediately and also urging the countrymen to continue their movement and peaceful programs till the removal of this controversial statue.”
