Jamaat-e-Islami declares peaceful nationwide demonstration on Tuesday protesting government’s unjust gas tariff hike decision

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr, Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 26th February, 2017 declaring nationwide peaceful demonstration program on 28th February, Tuesday protesting the government’s unjust and illogical decision of gas price hike and demanding the withdrawal of the decision immediately.

“The government has declared the decision of raising gas price from two phases from March 1 and June 1 respectively, which is completely unjustifiable and illogical.

As per the new tariff, the price of household single and double burner will be Tk 750 and Tk 800 from March 1 while Tk 900 and Tk 950 from June 1 respectively. In accordance with the latest decision, the price of per cubic metre of gas will increase to Tk 38 from 1 March and Tk 40 from 1 June. This decision already has increased the sufferings of the mass people. This unacceptable decision would be a huge blow for the poor and impoverished sections as well. The entire economy would suffer due to such irrational step of the government. It will turn the people’s life more troublesome. The countrymen are highly disturbed and aggrieved with this decision.

On behalf of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, I am declaring nationwide peaceful demonstration program on 28th February, Tuesday protesting the government’s unjust and illogical decision of gas price hike and demanding the withdrawal of the decision immediately.

I am urging all the wings and front organizations of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the countrymen to observe the declared program peacefully.”
