Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher shown arrested in a false case; placed in 3 day remand

Secretary General demands immediate release of the popular Jamaat leader

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 13 May 2019 demanding immediate release of critically ailed detained Jamaat’s central executive committee member and former MP Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher to ensure his proper treatmenr.

“Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher surrendered before a Comilla court on last 20 March in connection with a false and concocted case. He expected that his bail plea would be granted. But his plea was denied and he was sent to the jail.

Dr. Taher underwent through kidney transplantation while he was receiving treatment in abroad in 2017. Since then, he is remaining under regular medical check-up. Inside the prison this time, he became critically sick. The prison authority had no option but sending him to Comilla Medical College Hospital. His physical condition became deteriorated once again over there. Then he was sent to BSMMU Hospital in Dhaka. Subsequently he was admitted in the prison cell of the same hospital.

In the meantime, he secured bail from High Court in all cases. On his way to release on last 7th May, he was shown arrested in another false case. He was not a listed suspect of this case. However, the government has barred his release and detained him once again by showing him arrested in another case in order to harass Dr. Taher politically. It is really regrettable that despite his critical illness, the authority placed a 5 day police remand against him and surprisingly he was granted remand for 3 days. A person who is already admitted in a hospital, such a remand may pose a threat to his life. We have no word to condemn such brutality and vengeance of the government.

I am urging the concerned authority to cancel the police remand against Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher and to allow him treatment under the care and supervision of his family. Otherwise, the government has to take the liabilities for any untoward and unexpected consequences.
