Government intensifies its crackdown against opposition election campaigners, alleges Professor Mujib

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 17 December 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustified arrest of Pabna district Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and Atghoria Upazila Chairman Maulana Johurul Islam, Dinajpur district’s Nababganj Upazila Chairman Md. Nur-e-Alam Siddique and Mr. Tofazzel Hossen, the younger brother of the 20 party alliance’s candidate for Dinajpur-6 constituency and Dinajpur South organizational district Ameer Md. Anwarul Islam.

“The government has arrested the aforesaid Jamaat leaders and activists as a part of their conspiracy to foil the national election. I am vehemently protesting and condemning the arrest drives.

As the date of voting is approaching, the government has become reckless and desperate to intensify their crackdown against Jamaat-e-Islami and other opposition parties. This fascist government has no support from the general masses. In fear of massive defeat in the upcoming polls, they have begun conspiracies to foil the election. The election is behaving like a subservient part of the government. Likely the government, they are also delivering false speeches to misguide the people. I am calling upon the countrymen to resist the conspiracies of the government and the election commission.

Finally, I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of the opposition parties including Pabna district Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and Atghoria Upazila Chairman Maulana Johurul Islam immediately.”
