Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Assistant Secretary General Maulana Rafiqul Islam Khan has issued the following statement on 4 December 2018 protesting and condemning the re-arrest of 9 Jamaat leaders and activists including Natore district’s Lalpur Upazila’s Sadar Union Jamaat President Khairul Bashar Jewel and local Jamaat leader and Chougram Union’s former chairman Golzar Hossen Gias from the jail gate although they had secured bail from the High Court.
“Police and the concerned authorities have shown their utmost disrespect towards the High Court by re-arresting the Jamaat leaders and activists of Natore district’s Lalpur Sadar and Singra upazila from the jail gate and also by filing false cases against them. I am severely condemning the incident.
As a law-abiding citizen, Natore district Jamaat leaders and activists had secured bail from the high court. Police has violated the law by arresting and filing false cases against them. It is the obligations and duty of the law enforcement agencies to comply and follow the law. If they violate law, then who will secure safety to the people?
After the declaration of the election schedule, election commission should have absolute control upon the law enforcing bodies and the administrations. But still they are struggling to manage the situations. Then how will they hold a free, fair and credible election this time?
In this backdrop, I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatrashibir and other opposition parties for the sake of a credible and fair election.
