Nationwide arrest drive against opposition leaders and activists continues; Secretary General condemns

Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 1 December 2018 protesting and condemning the unjustified arrest of Mymensingh district Jamaat’s former Ameer and member of the Mymensingh regional team Professor Jashim Uddin, Noakhali district Jamaat’s Secretary Maulana Nizam Uddin, Fulbaria Upazila Jamaat Secretary Dr. Abdur Razzaq, Muktagacha Upazila Jamaat’s financial affairs secretary Dr. Azharul Islam Shahin, Dinajpur district’s Birampur Upazila’s Diur union Jamaat President Maulana Nazrul Islam and Nababganj Upazila’s Narayanpur unit Sramik Kollan Federation’s Secretary Md. Sekandar Ali.

“The government is using the law enforcement agencies unlawfully to arrest the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatrashibir and other opposition parties nationwide. Likely the ruling alliance activists, the law enforcers are also moving across the villages to create panic. They are assaulting the opposition activists as well. I am vehemently protesting such partisan role of the law enforcers.

As the scheduled day of national election is approaching, the government is intensifying its terror acts and arrest drives. The government is doing these activities to make a ‘give up’ situation for the opposition quarters in a bid to hold another farcical election. Even, the potential candidates, who had submitted nomination papers already, are not spared from the crackdown. Professor Jashim Uddin already submitted nomination papers to take part in election from Mymensingh’s Fulbaria constituency. However, he has been arrested unjustifiably. I am calling upon the fellow citizens to form mass resistance against such unlawful activities of the government.

Finally, I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir including Professor Jashim Uddin immediately.”
