Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 20 November 2018 protesting and condemning the unjust arrest of Gaibandha district Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary and Sundarganj Upazila chairman Mazedur Rahman.
“Police has unjustifiably arrested Gaibandha district Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary and Sundarganj Upazila chairman Mazedur Rahman as a part of the government’s conspiracy to foil the atmosphere which is necessary for holding a free, fair, credible and inclusive election. I am vehemently condemning the incident.
In one side, the potential candidates of the ruling party are continuing their campaign nationwide. On the contrary, the leaders and activists of the opposition forces and Jamaat-e-Islami are on the run. Police are looking for them and arresting them consequently. How a fair election is possible amid such a crackdown? The torture and oppression of the government is excessing all the limits. The government is damaging the atmosphere as they do not want the participation of the opposition in the upcoming general election. I am urging the fellow citizens of the country to resist government’s conspiracy to foil the electoral procedures.
I am calling upon the concerned authorities to stop their arrest drives and to release all the detained opposition activists including Gaibandha district Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary and Sundarganj Upazila chairman Mazedur Rahman immediately.”
