Secretary General collects nomination papers for Dhaka-15 constituency

The nomination paper of Dhaka-15 (Mirpur-Kafrul) constituency has been bought on behalf of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General, one of the top leaders of 20 party alliances, renowned organizer, noted social worker and distinguished physician Dr. Shafiqur Rahman ahead of the 11 national polls. Jamaat leaders led by Jamaat’s central Majlish-e-Shura member and Dhaka city North Unit’s Assistant Secretary Lashkar Mohammad Taslim collected the nomination paper from the office of the Returning Officer in Shegun Bagicha of the capital at around 2.30 pm. Among others, Jamaat’s Central Majlish-e-Shura member and Dhaka city North’s Assistant Secretary Mahfuzur Rahman, central Majlish-e-Shura member Nazim Uddin Molla, Advocate S M Kamal Uddin, Advocate Main Uddin, Advocate Rokon Reza Sheikh, Advocate Shafiqur Rahman, Advocate Sharif Uddin Khandakar, Advocate Shahin Akhter, Advocate Mir Nurnabi Ujjal, Advocate Asad Uddin, Advocate Lutfor Rahman Azad, Advocate Jobaidur Rahman Babu, Advocate Abdul Hie Chowdhury, Advocate K M Jashim Uddin, Advocate Jahangir Hossen, Advocate Nur-e-Alam Siddiq and student leader Salahduddin Aiyubi were present on the occasion. Marking the occasion, since the morning, Jamaat leaders and activists started gathering at the premise of the Returning Officer’s office. After the Juhr prayer, it turned into a festivity. After collecting the nomination papers, Jamaat activists left the area peacefully.

Biography:

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman is a noted figure in the political history of Bangladesh. Personally, he is admired for his modesty, honesty, humility, soft-speaking attitude, philanthropy and benevolence. He has proved his excellence in his personal, political and professional levels. He also played a significant role in the national politics. In all the previous democratic movements, Dr. Shafiq played a pivotal role. As its consequence, even in his student life, he was imprisoned in 1982. Under the current autocratic regime, he also became detained for several times. This valiant son of the soil was born on 31 October 1958 at Kulaora under Moulovi Bazar district. He is the 3rd son of late Abru Mia and late Khatibunnesa.

He passed SSC from local Boramchol high school in 1974 and HSC from Sylhet MC College in 1976. He obtained MBBS degree from Sylhet Medical College in 1983. Along with his career as a physician, he served the humanity by taking part in different political events. He got married Dr. Amina Begum on 1 January of 1985. Dr. Amina was the member of 8th National Parliament. This couple is blessed with two daughters and one son. Their eldest daughter is studying FCPS and simultaneously discharging the role as the registrar of a Medical College. Another daughter is also an MBBS and working as teacher in a Medical College. Their only son is studying in 3rd year of MBBS degree.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman initiated his political career through joining student politics under the banner of the then East Pakistan Chhatra League. He got involved with JSD in 1973. He joined Bangladesh Islami Chhatrashibir in 1977 with a vow to establish Islamic doctrine in this country. Later, he discharged duty as the President of Sylhet Medical College and consequently as Sylhet city President of this student organization. After completing the student life, he attended the national politics by joining Jamaat-e-Islami in 1984. He performed the responsibilities as the Sylhet city and Sylhet district Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami. Gradually he became the member of Central Majlish-e-Shura, Central Working Committee and Central Executive Committee. Dr. Shafiqur Rahman became Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General in 2010 and acting Secretary General in 2011. He was appointed as the Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami in 2016.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman is not only a political figure. He is a successful social worker and entrepreneur. He is the founding chairman of a non-government Medical College and hospital. He also served many schools, college and madrasa as the chairman of the governing body/management committee. He established significant number of orphanages, charity hospital and mosques. During his student life, he became the president of blood donation club ‘Pulse.’ He is the life-time member of Sylhet central Muslim Shahitto Sangsad, Bangladesh Red Crescent Society and Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA). He is one of the distinguished members of Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industries. He visited Saudi Arabia for multiple times to perform Hajj. He also visited various other countries including United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece and Belgium. He has a beautiful habit of reading and exploring knowledges during leisure.
