Huge number of people and properties destroyed in river erosion; Jamaat Ameer expresses concern

Urges Jamaat activists and affluent people to help the victims; blames government for their indifferent attitude

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Maqbul Ahmad has issued the following statement on 22nd September 2018 expressing deep concerns as many people became homeless and many establishments became completely ruined in different unions of Naria and Jazeera Upazila of Shariatpur district and neighboring Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district due to massive river erosion.

Many houses and valuable properties are becoming destroyed in different unions of Naria and Jazeera Upazila of Shariatpur district and neighboring Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district due to massive erosion in Padma River. I am expressing deep concern in this regard.

Many affluent and solvent people are becoming poor rapidly due to this river erosion. One after one village is going down under the water every day. Huge numbers of government establishments and educational institutions have been destroyed in Naria already. The erosion victims are passing days in starvations.

The government has not come forward so far to check river erosion or to help the victims. They are showing their utmost reluctance and indifferent attitudes in resolving the mass crises. Their irresponsibility indicates that the government has no liability towards the people. They have also insulted the erosion victims by not sending relief and other assistances so far. I am condemning such inhuman approach and actions of the government.

The government has to take responsibilities to check river erosion and also to rehabilitate the victims by constructing houses and providing foods, clothes and cashes. I am calling upon the Jamaat activists and the affluent sections of the society to extend their hands of cooperation to the erosion victims.
