Police arrests Jamaat leaders from Dinajpur and Brahmanbaria; Secretary General condemns

Police has unjustifiably arrested Dinajpur South organizational district Ameer and central Majlish-e-Shura member of Jamaat-e-Islami Anwarul Islam this afternoon. Similarly police arrested Brahmanbaria district’s Shorail Upazila unit Jamaat Ameer Maulana Kutub Uddin and 4 other party activists on 16th September night. Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 17th September 2018 protesting these arrest incidents.

“Police has arrested Dinajpur South organizational district Ameer and central Majlish-e-Shura member Anwarul Islam and Brahmanbaria district Jamaat leader Maulana Kutub Uddin along with 4 other activists just to harass them politically. I am vehemently condemning and protesting these arrest incidents.

We have been observing with deep concern that, ahead of the national election, the government is arresting the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir from different places across the country indiscriminately and continuously. It should be mentioned here, detained Anwarul Islam received second highest votes in Dinajpur-6 (Birampur-Hakimpur-Nababganj-Ghorahat) constituency in the national election of 2008. The government has arrested and subsequently filed false case against him just to keep him away from the electoral process. This arrest drive proved that, instead of holding a free, fair and credible election, the government has started plotting conspiracy to hold another lopsided election, full of rigging and intimidation.

The government realized already that they have lost the popular support completely. This is why; they have begun new plots to conduct another farcical election. I am urging the countrymen to form broad base unity against such heinous conspiracy of the government.

I am calling upon the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatrashibir including Dinajpur district Jamaat leader Anwarul Islam immediately.
