Jamaat Ameer and Secretary General deplore the arbitrary imposition of death sentences on Muslim Brotherhood leaders

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maqbul Ahmad and Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman jointly issued the following statement on 9 September 2018. They expressed shock and condemnation over the Egyptian court’s decision to mete out death sentences to 75 leaders and activists of the Muslim Brotherhood and imprisonment of different durations to others. In the statement, they said:

“We are shocked at the apparent lack of justice in the current Egyptian legal system and at how innocent people are languishing in prisons and death rows around the country. The imposition of the death sentence on 75 leaders and activists of the Muslim Brotherhood on 8 September 2018 is politically motivated and a mockery of justice.

“Since the overthrowing of the democratically elected government of Egypt in a coup d'état in July 2013, the country’s military junta has carried out most severe and unprecedented oppression and mass cruelty especially on Muslim Brotherhood leaders and supporters. The legitimate President Mohamed Morsi has been unjustly incarcerated by the military and suffering behind bars.

“Previously, the Egyptian court sentenced the supreme leader of Muslim Brotherhood Mohamed Badie and 47 others to life imprisonment. Through judicial harassment, political repression and other forms of human rights violations, the undemocratic government has continued persecuting Muslim Brotherhood activists as well as the general public.

“We urge all international human rights bodies, the United Nations (UN), and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to take appropriate measures to stop oppression of Egyptian people. We also draw the attention of the peace-loving community of the world to speak up against the brutality of Egypt’s Sisi regime.

“Finally, we call upon those in power in Egypt to stop political repression and to release all the detained leaders and activists of the Muslim Brotherhood immediately.”
