Arrest drive against Jamaat leaders and activists continues; Secretary General condemns

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 21st July, 2018 condemning the unjustifiable arrest of Rajshahi city Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Advocate Abu Md. Salim, Barisal City Jamaat’s Secretary Jahir Uddin Md. Babar and Rajshahi city’s Motihar thana unit Jamaat Ameer Oliul Islam Tipu.

“I am vehemently condemning the unjustifiable arrest of Rajshahi city Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer Advocate Abu Md. Salim and Barisal City Jamaat’s Secretary Jahir Uddin Md. Babar and Rajshahi city’s Motihar thana unit Jamaat Ameer Oliul Islam Tipu. These arrest incidents proved once again that the government and the election commission are not interested to hold a free, fair and credible poll in three city corporations. They are mulling ill-tactics to secure the victory of the ruling party candidates. City polls in the three city corporations is just one week away. But still the leaders and activists of the opposition parties are not allowed to conduct electoral campaign. They are being threatened and intimidated in a bid to hold another lopsided election.

The government has lost their popularity and acceptance completely due to massive repression and torture. This is why, they are hatching conspiracies to ensure their party men’s victory by utilizing the administration and the law enforcers unlawfully. I am calling upon the countrymen to launch mass resistances against such conspiracies of the government.

I am urging the concerned authorities to give up the strategies of torture, arrest drive and repression, to create level-play ground for all the candidates and also to release the detained members and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami immediately.
