Police arrests Rangpur city Jamaat Ameer; Professor Mujib protests

Nayeb-e-Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 24th August, 2017 protesting the unjustifiable arrest of Jamaat-e-Islami’s central working committee member, Rangpur city Jamaat Ameer and renowned academician Professor Mahbubur Rahman Belal, who has been detained by the policemen this midnight.

“Police has unlawfully arrested Jamaat-e-Islami’s central working committee member, Rangpur city Jamaat Ameer and renowned academician Professor Mahbubur Rahman Belal this midnight just to harass him politically.

The government is arresting the members and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami nationwide in a selective way with an ill intention to destroy the leadership of the party. Such arrest is really shocking and unfortunate as the entire nation is in preparation to celebrate the ensuing Eid-ul-Azha. The authoritarian government is conducting massive repression and crackdown against the opposition quarters in order to stay in office forcefully. I am calling upon the countrymen to protest against the tyrannical rule of the government.

Finally, I am urging the authorities concerned to release all the detained Jamaat members and activists including Jamaat-e-Islami's central working committee member, Rangpur city Jamaat Ameer and renowned academician Professor Mahbubur Rahman Belal so that they can observe the upcoming holy occasion of Eid-ul-Azha in a free atmosphere along with their families.
