Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar issued a statement today, 7 September, expressing deep concern over the desecration of a mosque and madrasa and the brutal attack that severely injured over a hundred students in Hathazari, Chattogram and simultaneously strongly condemning and protesting the incident.
In the statement, he said that, on 6 September (Saturday) at around 8 PM, during a procession organized for Eid-e-Miladunnabi, a young man named Aryan Ibrahim passed in front of Hathazari Madrasa, made an “indecent gesture” towards the mosque and madrasa, recorded it on video, and spread it on social media. When the madrasa students protested against this objectionable act, the terrorists launched a brutal attack on them. In this barbaric assault, over a hundred students of Hathazari Madrasa were seriously injured. I express my deep concern over this terrorist attack and strongly condemn and protest it. At the same time, I extend my sympathies to the injured and wish them a speedy recovery.
He further stated that Hathazari Madrasa is the country’s oldest and largest religious institution. Such a terrorist attack is part of a deeper conspiracy and clearly constitutes incitement. Disrespect towards sacred religious sites like mosques and madrasas is absolutely unacceptable, as these are closely connected with Muslims’ faith and beliefs. Therefore, it is everyone’s responsibility to show proper respect to religiously sacred places.
He emphasized that attacks like this are an evil attempt to spread division and violence in the country and society. However, the teachings of Islam are based on peace, restraint, and tolerance. We believe that all problems can be solved not through provocation, but through mutual respect and tolerance.
I strongly urge the concerned authorities to quickly arrest the perpetrators of this terrorist attack and bring them to exemplary justice. At the same time, I appeal to all to maintain responsible behavior on social media and refrain from actions that may hurt religious sentiments.
