Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 9th March, 2024 urging the countrymen to preserve the sanctity of the upcoming month of holy Ramadan.
"The holy month of Ramadan is amongst us with the sermons of blessings, mercy and salvation.
The nation is going to observe Ramadan in such a crucial period, when the lives of the general masses are fully disturbed due to misrule and oppression of the incumbent unelected government. Under the patronization of the government, in one side, people are suffering massively due to crackdown, tortures and oppression of the government while on the other, the government-backed businessmen and traders have increased the prices of all essentials and other iftar items and thus ruined the total atmosphere of this Ramadan. As a result, observing fasting in this holy month becomes very difficult. The general people are struggling to arrange their daily foods. So, managing iftar items in exchange for higher prices have made the Ramadan more challenging. Most of the necessary items are out of common's reach but the government is paying no attention to their sufferings. If the government were elected, they cannot lead a luxurious lives keeping the citizens hungry and starved.
So, I am calling upon the government to bring the prices of all essentials including rice, lentils, meat, fishes, greens and vegetables, sugar, dates within people's capacity even by providing subsidy.
I am also urging the government to release all political detainees including Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman so that they can observe fasting in Ramadan in a comfortable atmosphere. In addition, I am drawing the kind attention of the government and the people to keep all restaurants and food shop closed during daytime and simultaneously to preserve and protect the sanctity of the holy month of Ramadan."
