Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 28th November, 2023 protesting and condemning the torture, repression and ongoing arrest drives of the government.
"The tyrannical Awami League government has murdered democracy. They have seized people's voting rights away. Their greed for power has made them so blind that they have lost the minimum common sense and rationale. They have pushed the nation towards destruction. They have ruined the judiciary and there is no rule of law in the country. People have to be united against the fascism of the government. This fascist government will be ousted through massive movement of the people.
There is no congenial environment for holding a free, fair and credible election. The government is mulling to come back to power by keeping the opposition parties out of the election process once again. Top opposition leaders are denied bails and they are being kept behind the bar. Old political cases have been reactivated in order to convict the opposition leaders and activists. Charges are being framed in the absence of the accused. Even sentences are being delivered randomly without applying the legal procedure. Jamaat leaders and activists are being arrested everyday. If the targeted opposition man is not found during the raid, their family members, relatives even the women members are taken into detention. A reign of terror and panic has been established nationwide. In guise of democracy, the government has intensified its repression and torture like anything. It is the common feature of a tyrannical government to subdue the opposition forces. In last 24 hours, the authority has arrested 15 Jamaat leaders and activists from various places of the country including Dhaka south city Jamaat's working committee member Kamal Hossain and Bogra city Sramil Kollan Secretary Master Anwar Hossain. I am vehemently condemning these torture, repression, and arrest drives of the government and demanding immediate release of all political detainees.
