Acting Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 15th September 2023 protesting and condemning the obstruction against today’s pre-declared nationwide demonstrations, subsequent attack, ransacking the houses of the Jamaat activists and lodging of false cases and arrest drives.
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami declared peaceful demonstrations observed in all districts to press home the demands of releasing Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, other leaders and religious personnel, withdrawal of false cases and the restoration of caretaker government system. But police started intimidating from 14th September night to create obstructions against this program. They arrested around 50 Jamaat leaders and activists from various places of the country. The law enforcers also carried raid in the houses of Jamaat men, damaged their furniture and other household accessories. Even they seize items like smart phones, books etc. During the raid, the policemen misbehaved with the aged family members, kids and women of their families.
Police arrested 21 Jamaat-Shibir activists from Thakurgaon including district Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary Kofiluddin, Jessore’s Monirampur Upazila Jamaat’s working committee member Dr. Shariful Islam, Bagharpara Upazila Jamaat’s former Ameer and Upazila council’s former vice-chairman Nasir Haider and 16 others from various Upazilas of Dinajpur district. We are condemning these arrest drives.
The torture and repression of the incumbent government has exceeded all previous records. To convict the opposition leaders, the authority has reactivated the old cases. But they cannot subdue the ongoing movement by continuing such oppression. The present fascist government will be made compelled to accept next election under a caretaker government.
I am urging the concerned authorities to stop torture, harassment and arrest drive immediately and also to release Jamaat Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman and other political detainees, to withdraw the false cases and for restoring caretaker government system immediately.
