Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Ameer and former lawmaker Professor Mujibur Rahman has issued the following statement on 5th August 2023 protesting the arrest of more than 50 Jamaat leaders and activists including Dhaka north organizational district Ameer Afzal Hossain and simultaneously condemning the police’s attack on the peaceful procession of Rangpur city Jamaat-e-Islami.
Dhaka north organizational district Ameer Afzal Hossain has been arrested from his residence on 3rd August night. Police also arrested around 50 Jamaat men during nationwide arrest drive including 6 laborers and one security guard while working to repair Dhaka south city office, 5 from Dhaka north city, 2 from Dhaka south district and one from Meherpur.
Police also attacked a procession of Rangpur district Jamaat-e-Islami and arrested 8 from the spot. 30 Jamaat men also became injured in police’s attack. I am vehemently condemning such unlawful activities of the law enforcers.
Since the incumbent government came to the office, the government is lodging one after one case against the leaders and activists of the opposition parties including Jamaat-e-Islami. They are cancelling the previously granted bails and created a reign of panic and fear. In last one week, more than 8 hundred Jamaat men arrested from different places of the country including the capital Dhaka.
I am urging the government to stop oppression, torture, arrest drive and harassment and to release all detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami immediately.”
