Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami's Secretary General and former MP, Professor Mia Golam Porwar today, 12 October, issued a statement welcoming the Bangladesh Army’s move to take some of its officers into military custody over allegations of crimes against humanity and enforced disappearances.
In the statement, he said: “The process of bringing certain officers of the Bangladesh Army involved in abductions, enforced disappearances, and killings under trial has begun. The people of Bangladesh want to be proud of a patriotic army. But, regrettably, some members of this force have completely failed to show respect for the country’s existing laws and human rights.
He further said that the individuals involved acted as blind accomplices in implementing the agenda of eliminating opponents under the instigation of the fascist government. As a result, a terrifying environment of abductions and killings was created in the country, which is extremely unfortunate for any nation. However, the entire institution cannot be disgraced because of the crimes of a few specific individuals. Responsibility for the crimes will rest solely on the concerned persons.
He added, “The army has already made a clear announcement that it will assist this judicial process, and the accused have been taken into military custody already. We welcome this initiative of the army.
We hope that no injustice will be imposed on anyone. Through a transparent judicial process, the specific offenders will face appropriate punishment. This will not only address past wrongdoings but also compel others in the future to refrain from harming the lives and property of the people by abusing their profession or position. Ultimately, the nation will benefit in the long run.”
