Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General and former Member of Parliament Professor Mia Golam Porwar issued a statement on 29 August expressing deep concern and strong condemnation over the incident in which some members of the law enforcement agencies baton-charged and seriously injured more than fifty leaders and activists, including Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur.

In the statement, he said: “On 29 August (Friday) in the evening, at Bijoynagar in the capital, some members of the law enforcement agencies baton-charged and seriously injured Gono Odhikar Parishad President, former DUCSU VP, one of the July fighters, Nurul Haque Nur, along with more than fifty leaders and activists. We express deep concern and strongly condemn this tragic incident of injury. At the same time, we express our sympathy to the injured and pray for their speedy recovery.”

He further said: “After the fall of fascism, such an attack is extremely shameful, unwanted, and undesirable. We expect a tolerant approach from all sides. At a time when the nation is moving towards building a new Bangladesh, such attacks once again remind us of the days of fascism.”

“We call upon the concerned authorities to immediately arrest the attackers and ensure exemplary punishment under the law.”
