Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former MP Professor Mia Golam Porwar, issued a statement on August 7 strongly condemning and protesting the brutal murder of a journalist in Gazipur.

In the statement, he said, “At around 8:30 PM on Thursday, August 7, a group of assailants viciously hacked journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin to death with sharp weapons in the Chandana Chowrasta area of Gazipur city. He was serving as the Gazipur correspondent of the daily Protidiner Kagoj. We strongly condemn and protest this brutal killing and express deep concern over the incident. I pray for the forgiveness of the departed soul and extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.”

He further stated, “On the afternoon of August 7, Asaduzzaman Tuhin had broadcast a live report in Gazipur regarding extortion activities. That very night, the extortion ring brutally killed him. This clearly reveals the severe deterioration of the country’s law and order situation. If a journalist is not safe, what safety remains for the general public? This heinous murder is a grim warning for the nation. The current government has utterly failed to ensure the safety of lives and property.”

He continued, “The public is being tormented by the unchecked influence of extortionists. Failing to extract extortion money, they are not only attacking business establishments but also resorting to cold-blooded murder. They are even killing one another over disputes concerning the distribution of extorted money. There is now an urgent need to build a nationwide social resistance against extortionists and their patrons. I call upon the people of the country to launch a united social movement against these criminals.”

“I strongly urge the concerned authorities to swiftly arrest the killers of Asaduzzaman Tuhin in order to ensure exemplary punishment,” he concluded.
