Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam porwar said in a statement issued on April 20 that the recommendations of the Women's Affairs Reform Commission are directly contradictory to the provisions of the Holy Quran and and this is a well-planned attack on the existence of Islam and Muslim identity. Through this proposal, a deep conspiracy is underway to destroy the religious balance, family structure and social stability of the country. Saying this he demanded immediate cancellation of the unacceptable and controversial recommendations on women's issues.
He also said that the report submitted to the chief advisor by the members of the commission under the leadership of Shirin Parveen Haque, head of the Women's Affairs Reform Commission, on Saturday, April 19, is not in line with the religious beliefs of Islam and Muslims. On page 25 of the commission's recommendations, it is demanded to repeal the Muslim inheritance law and give equal property to men and women. We believe that the Muslim family and inheritance law prevailing in Bangladesh is basically written by the inheritance law prescribed by Allah Almighty. To repeal it means to take a stand directly against the Quran. This is not only an insult to Shariah law, but also major blow to the core of Muslim identity.
He said that the Holy Quran has declared adultery as a great sin and a heinous crime. However, the given recommendations may encourage adultery and discourage marriage, thereby taking a stand directly against the Holy Quran as well. We believe that such proposals will create extreme instability in the society. Those who are stirring up a disastrous conspiracy to destabilize the society and those who are playing tricks with the Muslim family and inheritance law must be exposed before the nation very soon.
He said that on page 9 of the commission's recommendations, it has been proposed to enact a common family law for all religions; if implemented, Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists- all will be separated from religious family laws and forced to come under a secular structure. This is a gross violation of religious freedom. It is further stated on page 9 that the law on marriage and family should be implemented under the CEDAW Charter drafted by the United Nations. Our clear observation is that, many of the provisions of CEDAW are directly anti-Islamic; where marriage is seen as only a social contract and simultaneously fundamental concepts like Islamic Nikah and guardianship are opposed over there.
He further said that in another place on page 9 of the said recommendations, it is proposed to view the family roles of men and women equally. Islamic scholars of the country believe that although Islam considers the status of men and women to be equal, it recognizes the natural differences in their roles. Therefore, the proposal to ‘view the family roles of men and women equally’ is nothing but an attempt to distort the Islamic social system.
In this situation, we, along with the learned scholars of the country, believe that the current interim government will take our concerns above into consideration and show respect towards the religious sentiments of the people and immediately declare these unacceptable and controversial recommendations null and void while upholding the religious provisions of citizens of all religions of the country.
