Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas arrested; Acting Secretary General protests; demands immediate release

- Maulana ATM Masum

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 9th December 2022 protesting the arrest of BNP’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and party’s standing committee member Mirza Abbas and demanding immediate release of all political detainees.

“To implement the strategy of suppressing the opposition parties, the government has taken initiatives to arrest, harass, lodge false cases, and cordon the party offices. As a part of the same strategy, the law enforcers arrested Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Mirza Abbas from their houses last midnight.

Instead of materializing the constitutionally recognized civil rights, the government is threatening continuously and making provocative statements. We are condemning such attitudes of the government. This can never be the political language. The premier’s address of breaking hands will push the nation toward more anarchy and chaos. The countrymen are united against the autocrats. People’s broad base unity will never be thwarted. The arrest of the political leaders will not bring any success to the ruling party. The opposition leaders had been arrested earlier as well. But the people on those occasions took to the street and secured their victories.

We want to draw the attention of the government by saying that, stop oppression immediately and bring an end to the intimidation and provocative speeches. Please bring back a peaceful environment by releasing the opposition leaders and activists. Let BNP arrange their pre-declared rally on 10th December. Otherwise, the government has to take the liabilities. We are urging the countrymen to take part in the one-point movement for establishing a caretaker government.
