35 Jamaat men arrested in nationwide crackdown; Acting Secretary General condemns

- Maulana ATM Masum

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Acting Secretary General Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 31st July 2022 protesting and condemning the unjust arrest of 35 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami from different places of the country on 30th and 31st July.

Police have attacked suddenly a peaceful procession of Jamaat-e-Islami and arrested 7 party leaders including Gazipur city Jamaat secretary Md. Afzal Hossain, Gasa thana Ameer Hafez Abdul Mottalib, and Industrial thana Ameer Ashraful Alam Razu and arrested another 5 from by carrying out an arrest drive in Gazipur on 30th July, similarly detained 8 Jamaat men from Bogra town and 10 from Bogra’s Shanjahanpur thana and also arrested Lakhipur district Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary Maulana Nasir Uddin Mahmud, district Sramik Kollan Federation President Momin Ullah Patwari, Ramganj Upazila Ameer Nazmul Hasan Patwari and two members of Islami Chhatrashibir on the same day. Police have been continuing their crackdown nationwide and harassing the general masses and opposition activists. I am condemning such arrest drives.

Jamaat-e-Islami has arranged nationwide peaceful demonstrations today protesting against the severe mismanagement and corruption of the government in the power sector. The ruling party’s subservient police forces carried out a nationwide arrest drive on 30th July night to suppress the pro-people movement. The incumbent government has kept the people silent for the last 14-15 years through means of torture, fear, and oppression. Actually, the government is conducting such arrest drives to conceal their massive failures.

Jamaat has been continuing its peaceful, systematic, and democratic movement for the sake of the countrymen and also to establish people’s due rights. No government in history had become able successful to thwart the mass movement and this government will not be able as well, Insha Allah.

I am urging my fellow countrymen to launch a massive movement against this failed government that had seized democracy and people’s voting rights. Besides, I am calling upon the concerned authorities to stop oppression and to release all Jamaat leaders and activists including Gazipur city Jamaat’s assistant Secretary Afzal Hossain immediately.
