Police arrests leaders and activists from Dinajpur district; Acting Secretary General protests

-Maulana ATM Masum

Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Maulana ATM Masum has issued the following statement on 8 February 2022 protesting the unjust arrest of Jamaat’s Dinajpur South organizational district’s Nababganj South organizational Upazila Secretary Maulana Obaidul Haque and similar arrest of 8 activists of neighboring Hakimpur Upazila.

Without any warrant of arrest, police has unjustifiably arrested Dinajpur South organizational district’s Nababganj South organizational Upazila Secretary Maulana Obaidul Haque from his house on 6 February midnight and 7 other activists namely Mofizul Islam, Atiar Rahman, Mostafizar Rahman, Moshiur Rahman, Md. Abu Khayer, Saiful Islam, Abdul Majid and Abdul Wahid Ali from their respective houses on 7th February midnight. I am vehemently condemning these arrest drives.

It is absolutely unlawful and unconstitutional to arrest a citizen out of suspicion. People’s rights and dignity both are damaged by such attempt. According to the constitution of Bangladesh, all citizens have the due right to lead a free and independent life. It is their basic right as well. So, this kind of arrest drive is really unfortunate.

I am urging the concerned authorities to release all the detained leaders and activists of Dinajpur and other parts of the country immediately.
