Meherpur district Jamaat leader arrested; Secretary General protests

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 30 August 2021 protesting and condemning the unlawful arrest of Jamaat-e-Islami’sMeherpur municipality unit Ameer Sohel Rana Dollar.

“Police has unjustifiably arrested Jamaat-e-Islami’sMeherpur municipality unit Ameer Sohel Rana Dollar on last 29th August. There was no arrest of warrant against him. Several days back, some other Jamaat leaders and activists had been arrested unduly as well. It has become a routine work for the government to arrest Jamaat leaders and activists. I am vehemently condemning such unhealthy initiatives.

Government has seized people’s freedom of speech and fundamental rights. The nation has turned into a police state. The law enforcement agencies, instead of safeguarding the people are being used now as a tool of government’s oppression. To demonize the dissidents as criminals never brings good result for any section.

I am urging the concerned authorities to stop repression and tortures and also to release all the detained leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-IslamiincludingSohel Rana Dollar immediately.
