Secretary General criticizes government for worker’s unprecedented harassment due to lack of transportations

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on July 31, 2021 protesting and condemning the harassment of the workers as the authority decided to reopen mills and factories without ensuring their transportation.

“Following the Eid vacation, the government had imposed strict lockdown without letting the workers to come back to their working places. People were arrested, harassed and fined nationwide including the capital for coming out of their houses due to necessary reasons. The ministers of the government make different and inconsistent comments about withdrawing lockdown. Some are saying that no lockdown will be imposed after 5 August, whereas other ministers are not confirming the statement. Some of them are talking about extending lockdown for another 10 days. Overall a clumsy and confusing situation is prevailing everywhere.

Meanwhile, the workers who reached at their native village for celebrating Eid, without managing their transportation the government suddenly announced to reopen mills and factories from 1st of August. As a result, the workers are coming back to the capital amid unprecedented sufferings and harassment. As there is no transportation arrangement, people are coming back by walking or by using rickshaw and other means. Amid the deteriorating condition of corona pandemic, the irrational decision of the government put more people into severe health risk. We are condemning the hasty and irresponsible decisions of the government.

Finally, considering the mass sufferings, I am urging the concerned authorities to take effective and rational measures for the sake of health safety and protection of the general masses.
