Medical team members and volunteers arrested in Cumilla; Secretary General demands immediate release

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 29 July 2021 protesting and condemning the arrest of 5 members of a medical team while distributing medical items among the covid-affected patients in Chauddagram of Cumilla district.

“Covid pandemic situation has become severely deteriorated across the country. The hospitals have failed to provide due treatment to the patients due to shortages of medical items. The corona affected patients are rushing from here to there for getting services. Many patients have died without receiving any treatment. Under such a critical condition, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has instructed its manpower to take stand by the side of the corona affected patients and their families. As a part of that initiative, a corona treatment team has been formed led by Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Ameer and former MP Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher.

On 29 July, this medical team was distributing oxygen cylinder and other medical accessories among the corona patients in Chauddagram of Cumilla district. At that time, as per the directives of the local MP, 5 members of that medical team were arrested. It is unjust, unlawful and inhuman to arrest those people who are serving humanities. It is really regrettable for the nation. We have no word to condemn this repression.

I am urging my fellow countrymen to raise voice against the torture and suppression of the government. I am also calling upon the concerned authorities to release all the detained medical team members immediately.”
