Secretary General regrets over tragic incidents of Lalmonirhat and Comilla; demands punishments of the real culprits

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Secretary General and former lawmaker Professor Mia Golam Porwar has issued the following statement on 2 November 2020 protesting and condemning the incidents of Lalmonirhat and Comilla districts.

On last 29 October, two men committed some derogatory acts against the holy Quran at the Burimari central Mosque of Patgram Upazila under Lalmonirhat district. Reacting to this incident, local Muslim devotees detained and assaulted him. One of them subsequently was beaten to death. Even the angry mobs burnt the dead body. This incident is really painful and condemnable. We are condemning the incident vehemently.

The deployed law enforcers narrated the incident as a reaction of the angry mobs. But 3 days after the incidents, we are observing that, police is arresting the leaders and activists of the Jamaat-e-Islami in connection with some false and concocted cases. Police is harassing the local Jamaat men. It is really regrettable to arrest the Jamaat activists by concealing the real scenario.

In another separate incident, two men from Korbanpur village of Muradnagar Upazila under Comilla district, through their facebook account made some comments supporting the sarcastic caricature gainst the holy Prophet (pbuH) which has been displayed in France recently. Local people reacted to the incident. Subsequently incidents like vandalism and arson took place, which are really tragic.

We are demanding immediate release of those Jamaat activists who had been arrested in Lalmonirhat. Besides, we are demanding fair investigations into the incidents of Lalmonirhat and Comilla in order to ensure due punishments of the culprits.
