Flood situation deteriorates in Northern region; Jamaat Ameer calls to provide all-out assistances to the victims

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has issued the following statement on 30 June 2020 expressing deep concern as the flood situation of the Northern region of the country has been deteriorated alarmingly.

Due to torrential rains and hillsides, the water levels of many rivers have gone up and in somewhat the waters are flowing over the danger level. Already flood situation has been deteriorated in Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Netrokona, Sylhet, Sunamganj and Comilla. Already one people has died in Jamalpur. Many people of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Jamalpur are now waterlogged. People have become helpless as they have lost their houses, crops and cattle.

The countrymen are already leading a miserable life from financial perspective due to adverse impact of coronavirus pandemic. Whereas, this flood is making people’s lives more tragic and horrible. In the flood areas, there are severe scarcities of food, shelter and safe drinking water. According to the media report, so far, the government has made no initiative to address this crisis. The flood victims did not receive any assistances from the authority as well.

We think that the government must take immediate steps to provide relief assistance to the people. As per the information of the met office, water level may increase more in the upcoming days. Before the situation gets worsen, we are urging the concerned authorities to take all preparatory measures.

In this critical condition, people of all classes and quarters, irrespective of their political differences should come forward to the help the people. I am calling upon the leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami of the concerned areas as well as my fellow countrymen to take stand by the side of these flood victims.
